How To Combat Computer Vision Syndrome

If you work on a computer, you probably know all about the struggles your eyes face. At the end of a long day of staring at a screen, your eyes probably feel dry, itchy, tired, and maybe even a bit painful. These can all be signs of Computer Vision Syndrome.

Computer Vision Syndrome affects over half of digital device users who are on their phones, tablets, computers, for more than 2 hours a day. This condition can also lead to other problems such as eye strain, headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes, and neck or shoulder pain.

Want to avoid dealing with these inconvenient and unhealthy side-effects of using your digital device all day? Follow the following tips:

Follow the 20/20/20 Rule
Make sure that you take 20 seconds break away from your screen every 20 minutes by focusing your eyesight on something that is 20 feet away.

Be Conscious of Blinking
When you work on a screen, your blinking rate drastically decreases, which results in the feeling of dry and itchy eyes. To avoid this, simply be sure to manually blink a bit more often than usual.

Take Breaks
This is a great suggestion because it not only benefits your eyes, but it benefits your body and overall attitude. Taking breaks will help give your eyes the rest that it needs, so take frequent shorter breaks rather than a longer break in your day.

Check Display Settings
The brightness and contrast of your screen can be drastically helping or hindering your vision. Try to adjust all parts of your display settings until your display is as visually comfortable for you as possible. If your display settings have things such as “night mode” or “blue light protection”, definitely try using those to combat unhealthy display settings.

Visit Your Eye Doctor
Visiting your optometrist regularly is the only way to be sure that your digital device use isn’t completely wrecking your eyesight. Schedule regular eye exams and always follow your optometrist’s advice.
