Vision Therapy

Vision Therapy is exactly what the name implies—therapy for your eyes. When your mind or body is suffering, it is recommended for you to receive therapy. The same sentiment goes for your eyes and vision care.

What Is Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy is a doctor supervised, non-surgical, and customized program of visual activities designed to correct or improve certain visual skills. It has been proven to be an effective form of treatment for people that cannot be treated with eyeglasses or contact lenses alone.

Where glasses and contacts simply compensate for vision problems, vision therapy attempts to teach the visual system to correct itself. It is preferred in some cases over eye surgery as it is a gentle and non-invasive approach to correcting eye issues. How Does Vision Therapy Work?

Vision therapy can include the use of lenses, prisms, filters, computer-assisted visual activities, and other tools in order to improve vision. However, successful vision therapy is not achieved on a structured list of tools and techniques. Instead, it is dependent on active engagement of both doctor and patient in order to determine what is necessary for the patient’s development.

Vision therapy can be used to treat various different eye/ vision conditions such as:

  • Strabismus (misaligned eyes)
  • Amblyopia (lazy eye)
  • Eye movement disorders
  • Accommodative (focusing) disorders
  • Visual-perceptual disorders
  • Vision problems acquired due to brain injury
  • And more.

Vision therapy has been proven to be successful because studies have shown that the human brain can change to function and respond to new stimuli. Neurological changes associated with learning occur mostly during early childhood, which is why vision therapy can be extremely effective for children, but it also happens in adulthood. Vision therapy in this way can still be very effective; it just may take a bit longer to “teach the old dog new tricks”.

What Vision Therapy Is Not

It is important to understand that vision therapy does not promise that you will “never need glasses again” after going through the corrective process. It cannot necessarily reverse nearsightedness, farsightedness, or other vision issues. Instead vision therapy’s approach as a full program of professionally developed and individually tailored techniques aim to help people’s vision problems improve and relieve them of their discomfort or irritation. It is not the same as sports vision therapy or reverse learning disabilities.

Vision therapy is a helpful therapeutic program. It is similar to physiotherapy but is instead a corrective regimen for your eyes instead of your body. If you have certain eye issues that you would like corrected, vision therapy might be the treatment for you. Call 416 656 2020 and talk to our vision therapy experts to find out what the best course of action is for you. Book an appointment online for Vision Therapy in Toronto.
