Dry Eye Treatment With iLux

iLux Dry Eye Treatment

Dry eye is a common condition today. This syndrome is caused by an alteration in the quantity or quality of tears, which are necessary to keep the ocular surface moist. In the case of dry eye syndrome, any of the three layers of the tear film (lipid, aqueous, mucus) may be affected.

The meibomian glands are at the base of the eyelashes and are responsible for secreting the lipid component of the tear film, which is essential to prevent early evaporation of tears. Dysfunction or obstruction of these glands is the common cause of dry eye.

In order to ensure the comfort of our patients at Dr. D’Orio Eye Care, we have high-tech equipment such as the iLux, which allows us to offer the best dry eye treatment.

The iLux offers the possibility of treating dry eye from an outpatient, non-invasive and painless procedure. This device acts by improving the functionality of the Meibomian glands. In most cases, the intervention takes only a few minutes.

Step by step guide of iLux treatment:
• A drop of topical anesthesia is placed in each eye.
• Disposable silicone pads are inserted behind the eyelid.
• Heat is applied to the affected area by a LED heating system. This allows melting substances that could be obstructing the glandular ducts to be dissolved. The sensors in the device continuously monitor the internal eyelid temperature during treatment.
• Finally, the eyelid is gently compressed as necessary to clean the blocked glandular ducts as well as express whatever residual substances are leftover.

The iLux allows the doctor to control the levels of heat and compression with a single button. Thanks to this, he/she can easily and quickly determine the location and duration of treatment. The device also has a magnifying glass, through which the professional can directly observe the Meibomian glands, allowing a personalized treatment.

This technology has been specially designed to combat the causes of dry eye quickly and effectively. If necessary, this therapeutic intervention can be repeated on a regular basis.
