Eye health is more than just clear vision. Eyes are connected to the entire body, influenced by genetics, the environment, and lifestyle. Your eyes sense millions of colours, have a broad field of view, and can recover from certain light injuries within two days. Tons of things can support or sabotage eye health.

High blood pressure, diabetes and autoimmune diseases can put you at risk for vision changes or eye disease. Certain medications for chronic illness can lead to dry eyes or blurred vision. Antioxidant-poor diets can accelerate age-related eye issues. Systemic infections and compromised immune systems can delay recuperation in eye tissue.

Factors That Affect Eye Health:
  1. Systemic Health

Conditions like Type 2 diabetes and hypertension can damage the eye blood vessels and lead to vision loss. Regular eye exams are essential for early detection. Some medications may affect vision — consult your doctor if changes occur. Eat antioxidant-rich foods (e.g., spinach, salmon, sweet potatoes) to protect against eye tissue damage.

  1. Genetic Factors

A family history of eye diseases (like glaucoma or macular degeneration) increases your risk. Genetic testing can provide insight. Routine exams and healthy habits — like UV-blocking sunglasses, a balanced diet, and avoiding smoking — can help mitigate inherited risks.

  1. Environmental Impact

UV rays, pollution, and irritants like smoke can harm your eyes. Use UV-protective sunglasses, maintain clean indoor air, and take precautions with allergens. Blue light from screens causes strain — use filters and take regular breaks.

  1. Sleep Quality

Poor sleep can cause dry eyes, blurry vision, and headaches. Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep. Naps may help with fatigue, but consistent nighttime rest is key for eye health.

  1. Digital Strain

Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Adjust screen brightness and avoid long periods of uninterrupted screen time.

Do Eye Health Supplements Work?

Eye health supplements are commonly advertised to safeguard eyesight, decelerate age-related deterioration, and bridge nutritional deficiencies. These supplements mostly target vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds associated with eye health.

Common eye health supplements, their primary nutrients and uses according to research can be seen in the table below.

Supplement Type Key Nutrients Supported Conditions / Benefits
AREDS/AREDS2 blends Vitamin C, Vitamin E, lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc, copper Slows progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) (AREDS/AREDS2)
Fish oil / Omega-3s EPA, DHA

May support retina health and dry eyes
Multivitamins Wide range (A, C, E, B-complex, zinc, selenium) Supports overall eye health, prevents deficiency-related eye issues
Carotenoids Beta-carotene, lycopene, cryptoxanthin Mixed evidence for slowing AMD and other eye problems

Studies have come back mixed for many eye health supplements. For instance, beta-carotene, vitamin C, lycopene and cryptoxanthin have been tested for their effect on slowing vision loss, though not all trials demonstrated definitive benefits.

Large trials such as the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) found that a unique blend of vitamins C and E, zinc, copper, lutein and zeaxanthin can help delay the progression of age-related macular degeneration in at-risk individuals. The AREDS2 study subsequently revised the formula, eliminating beta-carotene and increasing lutein and zeaxanthin, which could be safer and more effective in certain populations.

Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA, get a lot of attention for eye health. DHA helps cell repair and can help ease inflammation in the retina, which is key as eyes get older.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids present in dark green vegetables. A few studies indicate they may help block damaging sunlight and minimize eye damage risk, but results aren’t definitive for all.

Multivitamins might help prevent eye issues caused by vitamin or mineral deficiencies in populations that don’t have access to a diverse diet.

Supplements aren’t risk-free. Certain nutrients can interact with other medications or cause side effects. So, just make sure you consult with your eye care professional before introducing any new supplement, particularly if you have underlying health issues or take other medications. A personalized plan can assist in aligning the supplement schedule to specific needs and risks.

Eat Right For Bright Sight: Simple Nutrition Tips For Eye Health

Good eye health starts with what you eat. A nutrient-rich diet helps protect your vision and lowers your risk of common eye diseases. Here’s what to focus on:

  • Fatty Fish (2–3x/week):

Salmon, sardines, and mackerel are full of omega-3s (DHA & EPA), which support retina function and reduce dry eye and macular degeneration risk.

  • Leafy Greens (daily):

Spinach, kale, and collards are packed with vitamin C, E, lutein, and zeaxanthin—powerful antioxidants that block damaging light.

  • Orange Veggies (2–3x/week):

Carrots, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin are rich in beta-carotene (vitamin A), which supports night vision and eye surface health.

  • Nuts & Seeds:

A small handful of almonds or sunflower seeds adds vitamin E to fight cell damage.

  • Mediterranean Diet:

This heart-healthy diet — full of olive oil, grains, veggies, fish, and nuts — is also great for your eyes.

For those at risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), ask your doctor about AREDS supplements — a blend of specific vitamins that may help slow its progression.

Eating a variety of whole foods daily is your best bet for long-term eye health.

In A Nutshell

In conclusion, maintaining good eye health requires a holistic approach that includes a balanced diet, regular eye exams, and, when appropriate, targeted supplements. While some supplements show promise—especially for conditions like AMD—they’re most effective when paired with healthy lifestyle habits. Always consult your eye care professional before starting any new supplement. Your eyes deserve personalized care for lasting vision.

Ever wondered if your eye makeup could be causing more harm than good? In this blog, we will discuss the top eye makeup products to avoid for healthy eyes. From irritating ingredients to potential long-term effects, the choices we make in our beauty routines can impact our eye health more than we realize. Join us as we explore the risks and alternatives to keep your eyes both stunning and healthy.

1. Kohl/Kajal

Lead contamination is a significant concern associated with traditional kohl or kajal. The presence of lead in kohl can result in lead poisoning, which may manifest as vision impairments, frequent headaches, and persistent fatigue.

Opting for modern formulations of kohl or kajal can mitigate the risk of lead contamination. These modern products undergo stringent testing processes to guarantee their quality and safety for use around the delicate eye area.

2. Glitter Eyeshadows

Glitter eyeshadows, popular for their sparkle, can also pose risks to eye health. Glitter particles have the potential to flake off during application or wear, causing discomfort and irritation. When these particles enter the eyes, they may lead to scratching of the cornea, resulting in pain and vision disturbances.

When using glitter eyeshadows, avoid applying glitter too close to the lash line or inner corners of the eyes, as this increases the likelihood of particles entering the eyes. Instead, focus on applying the product on the eyelids and outer corners to reduce the risk of irritation.

Proper removal of glitter eyeshadows is essential to prevent eye irritation and damage. Avoid rubbing or tugging at the delicate skin around the eyes when removing glitter makeup, as this can cause irritation and redness. Instead, use a gentle makeup remover specifically designed for waterproof or long-wearing formulas to effectively dissolve and remove the glitter particles.

3. Waterproof Mascara

Waterproof mascara is known for its long-lasting formula but removing it can be quite challenging. The mascara’s resistant nature requires thorough removal, often leading to vigorous rubbing. This excessive rubbing can strain the delicate skin around the eyes.

Continuous use of waterproof mascara can lead to eye strain and discomfort. The lashes, in particular, are at risk of being damaged due to the harsh rubbing needed for removal. Prolonged exposure to waterproof mascara can also result in dryness and brittleness of the eyelashes.

4. Eyelash Extensions And Glue

Eyelash extensions involve the use of adhesives that may contain formaldehyde and other harsh chemicals. These substances can trigger allergic reactions or eye irritation in some individuals. Allergic reactions can manifest as redness, itching, or swelling around the eyes. It is crucial to opt for high-quality glue that is formaldehyde-free to minimize the risk of adverse effects.

When getting eyelash extensions, ensure that the technician follows proper hygiene practices. Sanitization of tools and work areas is essential to prevent eye infections. Maintaining good eye hygiene by avoiding rubbing or touching the eyes excessively can help reduce the risk of irritation or infections.

5. Expired Makeup

Expired makeup, such as mascara and eyeliner, harbours bacteria, increasing the risk of eye infections. Symptoms include redness, swelling, and discomfort. It is crucial to regularly check expiration dates and replace old makeup to prevent bacterial contamination.

6. Certain Eyeliners

Some eyeliners contain preservatives like parabens or formaldehyde-releasing agents. These substances can lead to irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. To avoid these issues, consider opting for natural or hypoallergenic eyeliners. It’s crucial to conduct a patch test before regular use.

Certain eyeliners may also contain synthetic dyes that can be harmful to the delicate skin around the eyes. These dyes have the potential to cause irritation, redness, or even more severe reactions. Opting for eyeliners made with natural and organic ingredients can help minimize the risk of adverse effects on your skin.

7. Pressed Powders And Pigments

Talc, a common ingredient in pressed powders and pigments, can sometimes be contaminated with asbestos. The use of talc in eye makeup products has raised concerns about the safety of these cosmetics. Asbestos exposure through talc-based products can lead to severe health issues like mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer affecting the lungs and abdomen.

When choosing eye makeup products, consumers should be cautious about the ingredients listed on the packaging. Opting for natural or organic alternatives can help minimize the risks associated with talc.

Safe Alternatives For Eye-Friendly Makeup

When choosing eye cosmetics, opt for nontoxic makeup and safe cosmetics to protect your delicate eye area. Look for organic eye shadow and cosmetic eye products made with natural ingredients.

Consider creating your own eye makeup using simple ingredients like cocoa powder for a natural brown shade or beetroot powder for a rosy tint. Experiment with homemade makeup formulations to ensure the safety of your eye area.

When it comes to protecting your eyes, always choose eye-friendly makeup that is free from harmful chemicals and irritants. By opting for natural, organic alternatives and supporting ethical brands, you can ensure the health and safety of your delicate eye area.

By being aware of the potential risks associated with certain eye makeup products and ingredients, you can prevent irritation, infections, and long-term damage. Opt for high-quality, safe alternatives and practice good makeup hygiene, such as replacing expired products and removing makeup gently. Your eyes are delicate and deserve the best care, so prioritize their health by choosing eye-friendly makeup options. With these precautions, you can enjoy beautiful, vibrant eyes without compromising their well-being.

Eye emergencies can arise unexpectedly, causing discomfort and potential vision impairment. When it comes to these common eye emergencies, the treatments often involve cleaning the eye or seeking prompt medical attention. Depending on the severity, treatments may range from quick fixes to longer treatment plans. Early recognition and swift action are crucial in managing these emergencies effectively. Let’s discuss common eye emergencies and their treatments below.

Common Eye Emergencies
1. Corneal Abrasions

Corneal abrasions are common eye injuries that occur when the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, is scratched or scraped. To promote healing, antibiotic ointments or patches may be used to protect the eye and prevent infection. It is important to avoid rubbing the affected eye as this can worsen the injury.

2. Chemical Burns

Chemical burns to the eye require immediate action. The first step is to irrigate the eye with water for at least 15 minutes to flush out any chemicals. After irrigation, it is crucial to seek medical evaluation promptly. Depending on the severity of the burn, further treatment options may be necessary.

3. Retinal Detachments

Retinal detachments occur when the retina, a layer of tissue at the back of the eye responsible for vision, becomes separated from its normal position. Surgical intervention is often required to reattach the retina and restore vision. Prompt medical attention is essential in these cases to prevent permanent vision loss.

Eye emergencies can be distressing and require immediate care. If you experience an injury or sudden change in vision, it is crucial to seek professional help as soon as possible. Remember not to delay seeking medical attention in case of an emergency.

Immediate Measures For Eye Injuries
1. Rinsing The Eye With Clean Water

If you or someone you know experiences a minor eye injury, rinsing the eye with clean water is a simple and effective immediate measure. This can help remove any foreign objects that may be causing discomfort or irritation. By gently flushing the eye with water, you can potentially wash away debris and alleviate some of the symptoms.

2. Avoid Rubbing Or Applying Pressure

It’s essential to resist the urge to rub or apply pressure to an injured eye. Rubbing can worsen the injury and potentially lead to further harm. Instead, it’s best to leave the affected area untouched and avoid any unnecessary contact. Applying pressure could also increase the risk of damage, so it’s crucial to refrain from doing so.

3. Covering The Injured Eye With A Sterile Dressing

To provide temporary protection for an injured eye, covering it with a sterile dressing is recommended. This can help shield the eye from additional harm while seeking medical attention. Make sure to use a clean and sterile material when covering the eye, such as a gauze pad or cloth. However, keep in mind that this is only a temporary measure until professional medical assistance can be obtained.

When To Seek Professional Eye Care

If you experience severe pain or sudden vision loss, it is crucial to seek immediate professional medical care. These symptoms could indicate a serious eye emergency that requires urgent attention from an eye doctor. Delaying treatment in such cases may lead to complications or permanent damage. Any injury that involves a penetrating object or exposure to chemicals should be evaluated by an eye care professional. Even if the injury seems minor, it is essential to have it examined by an expert who can determine the extent of the damage and provide appropriate treatment.

Eye doctors are trained to handle various eye emergencies and can offer specialized care tailored to your specific situation. They have the knowledge and equipment necessary to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions effectively. By seeking professional help promptly, you increase your chances of receiving timely intervention and minimizing potential long-term consequences.

Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution. By prioritizing our eye health and being prepared for unforeseen situations, we can safeguard our vision and enjoy a better quality of life. Stay informed, take proactive measures, and seek professional help when needed. Your eyes deserve the best care possible. Summer is a time for fun and outdoor activities. However, it’s also important to take care of your child’s eyes during this season. Without proper eyecare during the summer, your children can end up with sunburnt, dry, and irritated eyes. Here are some tips on how to keep children’s eyes healthy in the summer:

1. Sunglasses With UV Protection

Make sure your child wears sunglasses that provide UV protection. This will shield their eyes from harmful sun rays and reduce the risk of long-term damage. Look for sunglasses with labels indicating they block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.

2. Hats Or Visors For Extra Shade

In addition to sunglasses, hats or visors can provide additional shade and protect your child’s eyes from excessive sunlight exposure. These accessories not only add a stylish touch but also help safeguard their delicate eyes.

3. Stay Hydrated

Hot summer days can lead to dehydration, which can cause dry eyes and discomfort. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated will not only benefit their overall health but also help maintain moisture in their eyes.

4. Be Cautious Around Chlorinated Pools

Chlorinated pools are a common feature of summer fun, but chlorine can irritate the eyes. To protect your child’s eyes while swimming, encourage them to wear swim goggles. Goggles create a barrier between the pool water and their sensitive eyes, preventing irritation.

5. Do Not Rub Eyes

It’s important to educate your child about the potential hazards of rubbing their eyes after spending time outside. Rubbing can transfer dirt, pollen, and other allergens from their hands directly into their eyes, leading to irritation and discomfort. Encourage them to use a clean tissue or wash their hands thoroughly before touching their eyes.

6. Apply Sunscreen Around The Eyes

When applying sunscreen on your child’s face, make sure to include the area around their eyes. However, be cautious not to get any sunscreen directly in their eyes as it can cause stinging and irritation. Use gentle motions and apply the sunscreen carefully around the eye area without making direct contact with the eyes themselves.

7. Clean Eyes Immediately If Foreign Objects Enter

In the summer, it’s common for children to play in the sand or take part in other sports. Accidents can happen during these outdoor activities that involve flying debris or particles. To ensure quick and effective response in case something gets into your child’s eye, keep an emergency eyewash solution readily available. This will help flush out any foreign objects and minimize potential damage until you can seek professional medical assistance if necessary.

By following these summer eyecare tips, you can help ensure your child’s eyes stay healthy and protected during the sunny season. Remember to encourage good eye hygiene, be cautious with sunscreen application, and wear eye protection when outdoors. Take action now! Implement these simple strategies today to safeguard your child’s precious vision throughout the summer months and beyond.

Protecting your child’s vision should be a priority all year round as regular eye exams are crucial for detecting any potential issues early on and addressing them promptly. Don’t forget to schedule regular check-ups with your optometrist! The holidays are a time full of fun, socializing, and… eating! It is no secret that for many, the holiday season means a number of decadent, extravagant, and generous feasts. But just because it’s the holiday season, it doesn’t mean you need to stop promoting your eye health. Whether you are preparing your own holiday feast, or attending as a guest, here are some delicious foods you can indulge in while keeping your eyes healthy!

1. Appetizer: Cheese

Cheese comes in many unique shapes, forms, and flavours, and can be a standalone appetizer or incorporated easily into something more complex. It is a great appetizer choice for any holiday celebration. Not only is cheese a delicious and flexible ingredient, but it is also quite healthy for your eyes!

Cheese is nutrient-rich and is a great source of not only calcium but also Vitamin A, B12, phosphorous, zinc, and more. It is also rich in antioxidants and Omega-3 fatty acids, all of which are essential for maintaining healthy eyesight. Further, Vitamin A1 (Retinol), which is responsible for creating a barrier to protect the surface of the eyes from bacterial infection, is also found in cheese. So, dust off your cheese board, whip up some cheese balls, or add cheese to your favourite holiday appetizer to boost your eye health!

2. Main: Turkey

Move over Christmas ham, there’s a new main dish in town! Well, it’s not exactly new, but this holiday staple is flavourful and healthy, and does not only need to be eaten at Thanksgiving! Turkey is high in zinc and the B-vitamin Niacin, both of which are essential to strong and healthy eyes. Zinc helps to prevent the formation of cataracts, as well as age-related macular degeneration, and also promotes the production of melanin, which protects the eyes from the sun. Zinc has also been shown to increase night vision… perfect for catching Santa on his yearly visit! Turkey is also high in B-vitamins, which can help keep your eyes lubricated and prevent Dry Eye.

And don’t forget to serve your turkey with a side of cranberry sauce! This berry is high in Vitamin C and Bioflavonoids, which work together to reduce the risk of certain cancers, cataracts, and infections. A perfect match! Turkey also does double duty for your health; due to it being high in protein and low in fat, it is a healthy choice for your body as well as your eyes. So don’t feel guilty about grabbing a second helping of holiday turkey… or about making yourself a delicious turkey sandwich the next day!

3. Side Dish: Dark Greens

To accompany your turkey, it is important to have healthy side dishes. Ensure one of your sides is a dark green vegetable: brussels sprouts, green beans, broccoli, or spinach will fit the bill perfectly. Dark green veggies are high in Omega-3’s as well as Vitamin C and A… they are like a super food for your eyes!

Brussels sprouts, broccoli, beans, and spinach are also rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, which protect the retina and reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. They can also help block blue-light from reaching the retina, reducing light-induced oxidative damage. If eating these veggies can help boost your retinal strength and prevent retinal damage, what are you waiting for? Include one (or even two!) in your holiday meal this year!

4. Side Dish: Sweet Potatoes/Carrots

Add some colour (and health benefits) to your meal by including an orange vegetable side dish as well! No holiday meal is complete without sweet potatoes, which are rich in beta-carotene, a carotenoid and antioxidant that promotes good eyesight. This veggie is also loaded with Vitamins C and E, and are further protection against the development of cataracts, alongside helping to maintain a healthy amount of collagen in your cornea.

Carrots are another orange vegetable that share many of the benefits of sweet potatoes and are the OG eye health food! Also rich in Vitamin A and beta-carotene, carrots help promote a healthy eye surface. Want the best of both worlds? Why not cook up a delicious carrot and sweet potato casserole?

5. Dessert: Dark Chocolate

If you are a sweet lover, never fear! No holiday meal is complete without dessert! However, when you are planning your decadent dessert, reach for the dark chocolate. Dark chocolate has a higher proportion of cocoa than its counterparts, and cocoa is where many of chocolate’s health benefits lie. Dark chocolate can provide a healthy source of iron, copper, magnesium, zinc, manganese, and selenium to the body. It is also full of antioxidants, flavonoids, and flavones. Not only will these benefit your eyes, but your overall health as well!

Choose a chocolate with 70-80% dark chocolate for maximum health benefits. If you are used to milk chocolate, dark chocolate may have a bitter taste at first. But you will quickly begin to appreciate and love its distinct flavour! So, if you want your meal to be healthy from start to finish, swap your chocolate dessert or sweets for dark chocolate this holiday season!

It is important to promote your eye health, no matter the season. Your vision is important and should be maintained wherever possible. While eating healthily can promote your eye health, visits to your optometrist are a crucial step in detecting any eye disorders before they become critical. Book your appointment today with Dr D’Orio Eyecare, by visiting https://drdorioeyecare.com/book-appointment/ or calling at 416 656 2020 for our Toronto location, or 416 661 5555 for our North York location.

One of the most important aspects of safe driving is… being able to see! Proper vision while driving is essential to driving safely, but many people may be unable to recognize that they have vision problems while driving, until it is too late. Many people overestimate their ability to see, especially when it comes to driving at night or in poor visibility. However, protecting yourself and your eyes while driving does not have to be a challenge, and in most cases, problems can be easily corrected. Accidents can be avoided by ensuring that your vision is not impaired while you are driving. Continue reading for tips on how to avoid driving with impaired vision.

Wearing Glasses

While many people wear glasses on a day-to-day basis, many glasses-wearers with minor vision corrections only don their eyewear in specific scenarios. While you may not believe your corrective lenes are always required, in many provinces (including Ontario) you may be legally required to wear your glasses when driving to meet vision standards.

Did you know that in Ontario, if you are wearing glasses in your driver’s license photo, you are legally required to wear them when driving? Further, it is listed on your license if you require corrective lenses, whether you wear glasses or contacts. In some cases, such as for those with under 6/15 vision, you may not be allowed to drive even while wearing prescription lenses. In order to avoid driving with impaired vision, and potentially even breaking the law, always wear your prescribed corrective lenses while driving.

Poor Distance Vision

If you suffer from Myopia, or short sightedness, you should always wear glasses while you drive. This condition means that you are unable to properly see into the distance, and the condition can vary from mild to severe. Even in mild cases, you may not realize how poorly you are seeing distant objects, and this can be especially dangerous when driving. You may be unable to properly read street signs, see a light change, or even an obstacle—such as a pedestrian, or accident—up ahead.

For many people myopia can develop with age, and it may be difficult to recognize—or for some, to admit—that distance glasses are required. Fortunately, addressing myopia is simple, and can be solved with an eye examination and corrective lenses. In order to ensure you are not developing myopia and unknowingly driving with impaired vision, be sure to engage in regular eye examinations… no matter your age.

Driving at Night

Driving at night can be dangerous, as darkness inherently means reduced visibility. Coupled with untreated eye conditions, it can be even more so. For those suffering from conditions such as Astigmatism, driving at night can be difficult. Astigmatism is an irregularity in the curvature of the eye that causes a blurring of near and distance vision and can cause squinting to clear vision.

Other conditions, such as Glaucoma may cause your peripheral vision to be reduced, thus preventing you from seeing dangerous obstacles, especially at night. While glaucoma cannot be cured, cylindrical or toric lenses can be used to correct this deficiency, allowing proper vision.

No matter what type of lenses you are wearing, night driving can be difficult due to reflections of light on your windshield, and your glasses. Fortunately, non-glare lenses or anti-reflective coatings can help you avoid glare and reflections when driving at night. Plus, non-glare lenses offer higher scratch resistance compared to standard lenses.

Basic Precautions

Even if you do not suffer from an eye condition, there are some basic precautions that you can take to ensure that your vision is optimal when driving. Cleaning your windshield and headlights, properly defogging your windows, and turning off your in-car lighting at night can all help increase your visibility. Further, reducing your speed and removing in-car distractions such as your phone can help keep you safe while driving.

No matter what symptoms you face when driving, the experts at Dr D’Orio Eyecare can help you find a solution for all your daily vision needs! Did you know germs can enter through your eyes? While not a novel idea, many people are still surprised to learn that the eyes can be an easy access point for germs. If you are curious to find out how to protect your eyes from germs, keep reading!

1. Do Not Rub Your Eyes

The easiest way to protect your eyes from germs is by avoiding rubbing your eyes. Rubbing your eyes can happen consciously, but most times it happens unconsciously. We might do it when our eyes are tired, itchy, or irritated, but did you know that the more you rub your eyes, the more likely you are to allow germs to enter? Additionally, rubbing your eyes is never encouraged because if any debris is present in your eyes when you rub them, it can increase the chance of damage to your eyes and foreign body sensation. To protect your eyes from developing a serious eye condition, and to protect your eyes from germs, it’s important to never rub your eyes.

2. Keep Your Hands Clean

The main way germs enter your eyes is through your hands. Did you know that your hands carry around 3500 germs? It’s true! If you think about it, it makes sense. You garden with your hands, you cook with your hands, you build appliances with your hands, you even use your hands to clean your nose. If you use your hands often (which you most likely do), it’s also crucial to keep your fingernails trimmed and cleaned. Keeping fingernails cut will give germs a smaller surface area, so they are less likely to collect underneath the nail.

3. Follow Contact Lens Hygiene Guidelines

Do you wear contact lenses? If you do, you know how important it is to be hygienic when wearing them. Before putting contact lenses in, make sure your hands are clean. It’s recommended to clean your contact lens case every day, as well as refilling the case with fresh contact solution every day. If your contact lens case becomes damaged, ensure that you replace it immediately. Last, never wear your contact lenses while swimming. Wearing contact lenses while swimming can cause contact lens irritation, and will also increase the risks of viruses, bacteria, and other germs entering your eyes.

In order to keep your eyes healthy, it is important that you maintain a healthy diet rich in vitamins and nutrients. Your eyes are complex organs with many parts and need a variety of nutrients to function properly. Many conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts, can worsen due to a lack of vitamins. Especially as you age, nutrition can have a large impact on your eyes. To keep your eyes healthy, ensure your diet includes the following vitamins.

1. Vitamin A

Vitamin A is extremely important for eye health and supports multiple functions of the eye. As a component of the protein rhodopsin, Vitamin A helps the eye to see in low-light conditions. A deficiency in Vitamin A, while rare, can lead to night blindness.

Vitamin A also supports the cornea, the protective outer layer of the eye. In this case, insufficient intake of Vitamin A can lead to dry eyes, as Vitamin A is important in keeping the eye lubricated. In serious circumstances, lack of Vitamin A can lead to the eyes drying out and the cornea softening, resulting in irreversible blindness.

For the most part, humans get Vitamin A in foods rich in beta carotene. When the body ingests carotenoids, their body converts them into Vitamin A. While carrots might be your first thought when it comes to beta carotene, there are many other options that are rich in carotenoids. For instance, sweet potatoes, leafy greens, pumpkins, and bell peppers are also excellent sources of Vitamin A.

2. Vitamins E & C

Two vitamins that are important for your eye health are Vitamins E & C. These two vitamins are high in antioxidant properties and can help fight the free radicals that damage tissue throughout the body. When the free radicals attack proteins within the eye, it can often lead to the development of cloudy areas—or cataracts—on the lens of the eye. If you consume enough Vitamin E & C, through diet or supplements, it could help reduce your risk of developing cataracts.

If you are looking to increase your consumption of Vitamin E, look no further than seeds and nuts! Many different nuts and seeds are high in Vitamin E, including almonds, sunflower seeds, and peanuts. Cooking oils such as safflower oil can also be a good source of Vitamin E. In fact, salmon, avocado, soybeans, and leafy greens are also good sources of Vitamin E.

Unfortunately, the concentration of Vitamin C in the eye decreases with age, and so a diet rich in Vitamin C should be combined with supplements to counteract this decrease. For high Vitamin C intake, reach for fresh fruit and berries. Oranges, grapefruits, and other citrus fruits are high in Vitamin C, as are strawberries and blackberries. If you prefer vegetables, reach for the broccoli or brussels sprouts for your dose of Vitamin C.

3. B Vitamins

There are many B Vitamins that are extremely important to your eye health. Vitamins B6, B9, and B12 help lower levels of homocysteine, a protein that may be associated with inflammation and an increased risk of Age-related Macular Degeneration.

Vitamin B2, or riboflavin, is another vitamin with antioxidant properties, that can help alleviate oxidative stress in your eyes, reducing the risk of cataracts.

Niacin, also known as Vitamin B3, is an antioxidant that helps convert food into energy. Studies have recently suggested that it may also play a role in the prevention of glaucoma, a condition which damages the optic nerve. However, if you are taking supplements, take niacin with caution. Niacin may in fact pose adverse effects to the eyes, including blurred vision, macular damage, and inflammation of the cornea, if taken in too high a dose.

Different B Vitamins can be found in a variety of foods, especially in animal products. Eggs, liver and other red meats, fish, yogurt, and dark leafy greens are high in a variety of B Vitamins. However, you can also take a Vitamin B Complex supplement to fill in the gaps of Vitamin B in your diet!

To keep your eyes healthy, it is important that you consume a healthy, varied diet. A good rule of thumb to get a variety of vitamins and nutrients is to “eat the rainbow” and include a variety of colours and types of foods. The spring season is the perfect time to renew your active lifestyle; warmer weather and longer days make it easier to spend time outdoors, increasing activity levels. Living an active lifestyle can help improve your overall health… but did you know that it can also promote more healthy eyes? No matter your age, increasing your daily activity can help promote a healthy life, and healthy eyes. Read on to learn how an active lifestyle can assist in keeping your eyes happy and healthy.

Reduce the Risk of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a degenerative eye disease that occurs when there is high pressure within your eye, which over time can damage your optic nerve. The optic nerve provides a pathway between the eyes and the brain, and is therefore crucial to your eye sight. Damage to this nerve can cause irreversible loss of vision.

Participating in aerobic exercise can help improve blood circulation throughout the body… including the blood flow to your optic nerve. According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, you do not need to participate in intense exercise to reap the benefits provided by aerobic activity… a brisk, 20 minute walk 4 times a week will do. If you are looking for something more intense to raise your heart rate, try swimming, running, biking, or even dancing!

Increased Movement to Prevent Macular Degeneration

Similar to Glaucoma, the risks of age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) can be decreased by participating in aerobic activities. AMD can occur when abnormal blood vessels begin to form in the macula, located at the center of the retina. If these vessels leak fluid or blood, it can cause blurred vision or blind spots in the center of your vision.

As we age, it can become more difficult to continue an active lifestyle, whether this is due to a busy schedule, lifestyle changes, or other health concerns. However, studies have shown that exercising three times weekly may reduce age related macular degeneration by up to 75%. Maintaining a routine that includes regular exercise, even as we age, can greatly reduce the risk of age-related eye disorders.

Lower Risk Factors of Retinopathy

Retinopathy is another disease that occurs due to blood vessel changes in the retina. Retinopathy can be caused by high blood sugar levels—often due to diabetes—or high blood pressure, that causes blood vessels in the retina to leak into the retina. This can cause loss of vision.

Staying active with regular exercise, alongside consuming a healthy diet, can reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure and diabetes, and therefore will decrease your risk of retinopathy. Learn about the signs that could show diabetes is affecting your eyesight in our blog.

If you currently do not participate in very much physical activity, do not fear. Going for a short daily walk can get you’re the aerobic exercise you need to decrease many risk factors. As you get used to this level of activity, see if you can step it up: go for a longer walk, walk more quickly, or even try to jog for portions! Choose an activity that you find enjoyable: relax with a yoga class, go for a hike or nature walk, or check out your local dance studio. You will be amazed at how increased activity that you enjoy can improve your health and happiness!

A healthy lifestyle can go a long way in protecting your eye health. However, it is also important to participate in regular eye exams, in order to protect your vision. Have you ever heard random facts about your eyes that made you question their health? Have you been told by family and friends that certain things will hurt or benefit your eyes…but their advice just doesn’t make sense? What you are hearing may in fact be eye health myths! It’s likely that you have heard of one or more eye health myths throughout your lifetime. Continue reading to learn 5 myths about your eyes that have now been debunked!

Myth 1: Wearing Glasses Weakens Your Eyes, Making You More Dependent On Them

Were you ever prescribed glasses, but were afraid to wear them because you thought it would weaken your eyes? Well, that is a myth! If you have experienced a change in vision, it is extremely important that you wear your prescribed glasses. While glasses do not fix your vision, they bend light so that it properly hits your retina, allowing your eyes to focus on objects—and see them properly. Once you are prescribed glasses, you may notice that your prescription continues to change… this is not caused by glasses use, but by your own body and genetics. In fact, failing to wear your glasses can cause strain to your eyes, making it more likely your prescription could worsen. By wearing glasses you are not weakening your vision, you are in fact allowing yourself to see more clearly!

Myth 2: Eye Diseases Are Only A Risk For Those With Poor Eyesight

While you may believe there is a correlation between poor eyesight and poor eye health, eye diseases are actually a risk for anyone! Glaucoma and cataracts are diseases that anyone can experience, and often have to do with your age, genetic makeup and family history. Be careful, though… while the risk for these diseases increases with age, they can still occur at a younger age. Although there are no preventative measures for these diseases, there are some daily changes you can make to reduce the damage they cause. Early detection of eye disease is always the best measure to stop further damage to the eyes, so be sure to visit your eye doctor for regular checkups!

Myth 3: Reading In Dim Light Will Damage Your Eyesight

You will not damage your eyesight by reading in dim light… but it can still cause other related issues. While you will not experience vision loss from reading in dim lighting, you might experience headaches or eye strain. If you have access to additional lighting in your reading or working space, then it should be used in the evening hours to prevent eye strain. But, if you find you are trying to finish reading an action-packed chapter in your book and just can’t stop… you can rest assured that continuing to read in dim lighting will not damage your vision!

Myth 4: Eating Carrots Will Improve Your Eyesight

Eating carrots will not directly improve your eyesight. However, eating a diet that includes carrots and other vitamin-rich foods can help maintain your eye health. Carrots are high in beta-carotene, which is turned into Vitamin A by the liver. Vitamin A is important to both your overall health and eye health, and can assist in maintaining your eyesight. While carrots are good for you, you can also increase Vitamin A intake through many other foods including fish, leafy greens, and other bright vegetables. While eating carrots will never harm your eyesight, you do not need to eat like a rabbit… you can maintain your eyes with a varied, vitamin-rich diet!

Myth 5: Eye Examinations Are Only Necessary For People With Vision Problems

Do you believe that you have perfect vision? Although you might have 20/20 vision and no need for corrective lenses, it is still necessary to participate in regular eye examinations. Annual eye examinations allow your optometrist to discover eye diseases that may not be easily detectable, or can be more easily treated if caught in the early stages, such as melanoma or glaucoma. Your optometrist is also the only one who can catch any issues with your night vision or peripheral vision. Do not fall for the myth that 20/20 vision means your eyes are healthy, as this mindset can be detrimental to your overall health and wellness. To ensure your eyes really are “perfect,” check in with the experts, and have your eyes examined regularly!

How many of these eye health myths did you believe before reading this blog? We hope that we have helped clear up any misconceptions that you may have had about your eyes. Now, the hard part… to convince your friends and family that they do not know best! If you are curious to learn more about your eyes, how to keep your eyes healthy, and maybe even have some additional eye care myths debunked, contact your optometrist today!
