The holidays are a time full of fun, socializing, and… eating! It is no secret that for many, the holiday season means a number of decadent, extravagant, and generous feasts. But just because it’s the holiday season, it doesn’t mean you need to stop promoting your eye health. Whether you are preparing your own holiday feast, or attending as a guest, here are some delicious foods you can indulge in while keeping your eyes healthy!

1. Appetizer: Cheese

Cheese comes in many unique shapes, forms, and flavours, and can be a standalone appetizer or incorporated easily into something more complex. It is a great appetizer choice for any holiday celebration. Not only is cheese a delicious and flexible ingredient, but it is also quite healthy for your eyes!

Cheese is nutrient-rich and is a great source of not only calcium but also Vitamin A, B12, phosphorous, zinc, and more. It is also rich in antioxidants and Omega-3 fatty acids, all of which are essential for maintaining healthy eyesight. Further, Vitamin A1 (Retinol), which is responsible for creating a barrier to protect the surface of the eyes from bacterial infection, is also found in cheese. So, dust off your cheese board, whip up some cheese balls, or add cheese to your favourite holiday appetizer to boost your eye health!

2. Main: Turkey

Turkey also does double duty for your health; due to it being high in protein and low in fat, it is a healthy choice for your body as well as your eyes. 3. Side Dish: Dark Greens

To accompany your turkey, it is important to have healthy side dishes. Dark green veggies are high in Omega-3’s as well as Vitamin C and A… they are like a super food for your eyes!

Today, children are glued to screens, using computers, iPads, playing video games, or watching the television throughout the day. While online or hybrid learning models mean children must spend many hours on their device during school hours, breaks from school (such as winter break or march break) do not mean they will also be taking a break from screen time! Heavy screen use can potentially affect a child’s vision and eye health… but they will not stop using their screens to protect their eyes! Whether children are at school or on break, it is important to monitor children’s screen use to prevent digital eyestrain and decrease the risk of eye and vision problems caused by prolonged use of devices.

Risk Factors & Symptoms

Digital eyestrain is a condition that is caused by visual stress due to extended screen time. When using devices, we generally do not blink as frequently, leaving our eyes dry and irritated. Further, focusing our eyes at the same distance for an extended period can cause the eye muscles to become tired, leading to eye fatigue and headaches. There are many factors that can contribute to digital eyestrain, including: screen glare, blue light, poor posture during use, using the device at too close an angle, and more.

While most symptoms of digital eyestrain are temporary and will resolve when a child has finished their screen time, some symptoms can last longer. These can include: eye discomfort, fatigue, headaches, dry eye, eye redness and itchiness, blurred vision, and double vision. If you find your child is suffering from these symptoms, it is important to book an eye examination for a diagnosis before more serious eye conditions can develop. To prevent digital eyestrain from developing in the first place, continue reading.

1. Take Frequent Breaks

Children can easily become absorbed in a task—especially in an engaging video game or television show—and may not notice the symptoms of eye strain. It is important to remind your children that they need to take screen breaks periodically to allow their eyes to rest. Follow the 20/20/20 rule: look away from the screen every 20 minutes, focus on an object 20 feet away, for at least 20 seconds. This allows the eyes to refocus and rest, making eyestrain less likely to occur. If break reminders are difficult to maintain, try setting a timer!

It is also important that children walk away from the screen for at least 10 minutes every hour, allowing them to not only rest their eyes but stretch their muscles. Children ages 6 and over should be getting at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day! Encourage your child to get outside to play, as active play is the best exercise for young children. Not only is outdoor time excellent for children’s physical health, but it can also help improve their eye health. Outside play allows children to focus at different distances, and with variable natural lighting. However, if they are playing outside in winter, ensure they are wearing eye protection to avoid symptoms of snow blindness!

2. Blue Light Protection

Another way that screens can contribute to digital eyestrain is through exposure to blue light. Blue light emanates from both digital screens and the sun, and excessive exposure to this form of light can cause damage to a child’s retinas and disrupt their natural circadian rhythm. Damage to the light-sensitive cells in the retina can lead to macular degeneration, an eye condition that causes permanent vision loss. Blue light also suppresses the body’s release of melatonin, which can affect the quality and length of a child’s sleep.

To protect your child’s eyes from blue light, you may want to purchase glasses with blue light filters in the lenses. These glasses can be purchased in multiple styles, or, if your child already wears prescription lenses, can often be added as a coating. To block blue light from the sun, have them wear sunglasses when outdoors playing, no matter the season. Is your child averse to wearing glasses? 3. Ensure Adequate Sleep

Screen use can disrupt a child’s sleep not only due to its blue light emission, but also due to not allowing the brain to relax and move into “rest” mode before sleep. Not getting enough sleep can leave children with tired, sore eyes, as well as lack of energy. To ensure the best possible sleep, avoid exposure to screens for one hour before going to bed. To help achieve this goal, create a “bedtime” for your child’s devices, as well as a designated place where they go to “sleep.” Engage in off-screen activities for the hour before bed. For younger children, read a bedtime story or engage in off-screen play; for older children, encourage reading a book over grabbing the nearest handheld device.

4. Lighting & Screen Positioning

Finally, the location in which your child uses their screens can have an impact on the health of their eyes. Both lighting and screen positioning can be factors in an increased risk of digital eyestrain. If your child is using a computer, the screen should be located slightly below eye level, as looking up at a screen opens eyes wider and dries them out more quickly. For a small child, this positioning can be difficult. Invest in a height-adjustable chair to allow you to adjust the angle at which your child views the screen when they are using it.

When a child is watching television, ensure they are at least 10 feet away—more, if it is a big screen! You should also consider the level of lighting in the room where your child spends time watching television or using devices. Ideally, this space should not be lit as brightly as spaces used for writing or doing crafts. Computers and screens should be positioned so that light from windows and overhead fixtures do not shine directly on the screen, as this can cause difficulty seeing due to glare. If your child wears prescription glasses, an anti-reflective coating can also help to cut back on glare. If your child needs to—or insists upon—using screens even when not at school, optimizing screen placement can help cut down on the risk of digital eyestrain.

If your child is having vision problems, they may not immediately tell you about them. Therefore, it is important that children are taken to regular eye examinations to determine if they are having difficulties with their vision. It is recommended that children have their eyes examined annually, where the optometrist will conduct a complete vision test as well as check on the overall health of the eye. Your eye doctor will be able to determine if your child is suffering from digital eye strain, or another vision issue, as well as recommend treatment options and further tips for prevention.

The best thing for your child is to ensure that you are finding a balance between the digital and physical world. Children will never be able to go fully offline in today’s world, and so balance can be important for their mental, physical, and vision health. Proper vision while driving is essential to driving safely, but many people may be unable to recognize that they have vision problems while driving, until it is too late. Many people overestimate their ability to see, especially when it comes to driving at night or in poor visibility. However, protecting yourself and your eyes while driving does not have to be a challenge, and in most cases, problems can be easily corrected. Accidents can be avoided by ensuring that your vision is not impaired while you are driving. Continue reading for tips on how to avoid driving with impaired vision.

Wearing Glasses

While many people wear glasses on a day-to-day basis, many glasses-wearers with minor vision corrections only don their eyewear in specific scenarios. While you may not believe your corrective lenes are always required, in many provinces (including Ontario) you may be legally required to wear your glasses when driving to meet vision standards.

Did you know that in Ontario, if you are wearing glasses in your driver’s license photo, you are legally required to wear them when driving? Further, it is listed on your license if you require corrective lenses, whether you wear glasses or contacts. In some cases, such as for those with under 6/15 vision, you may not be allowed to drive even while wearing prescription lenses. In order to avoid driving with impaired vision, and potentially even breaking the law, always wear your prescribed corrective lenses while driving.

Poor Distance Vision

If you suffer from Myopia, or short sightedness, you should always wear glasses while you drive. This condition means that you are unable to properly see into the distance, and the condition can vary from mild to severe. Even in mild cases, you may not realize how poorly you are seeing distant objects, and this can be especially dangerous when driving. You may be unable to properly read street signs, see a light change, or even an obstacle—such as a pedestrian, or accident—up ahead.

For many people myopia can develop with age, and it may be difficult to recognize—or for some, to admit—that distance glasses are required. Fortunately, addressing myopia is simple, and can be solved with an eye examination and corrective lenses. In order to ensure you are not developing myopia and unknowingly driving with impaired vision, be sure to engage in regular eye examinations… no matter your age.

Driving at Night

Driving at night can be dangerous, as darkness inherently means reduced visibility. Coupled with untreated eye conditions, it can be even more so. For those suffering from conditions such as Astigmatism, driving at night can be difficult. Astigmatism is an irregularity in the curvature of the eye that causes a blurring of near and distance vision and can cause squinting to clear vision.

Other conditions, such as Glaucoma may cause your peripheral vision to be reduced, thus preventing you from seeing dangerous obstacles, especially at night. While glaucoma cannot be cured, cylindrical or toric lenses can be used to correct this deficiency, allowing proper vision.

No matter what type of lenses you are wearing, night driving can be difficult due to reflections of light on your windshield, and your glasses. Fortunately, non-glare lenses or anti-reflective coatings can help you avoid glare and reflections when driving at night. Plus, non-glare lenses offer higher scratch resistance compared to standard lenses.

Basic Precautions

Even if you do not suffer from an eye condition, there are some basic precautions that you can take to ensure that your vision is optimal when driving. Cleaning your windshield and headlights, properly defogging your windows, and turning off your in-car lighting at night can all help increase your visibility. Further, reducing your speed and removing in-car distractions such as your phone can help keep you safe while driving.

1. Do Not Rub Your Eyes

The easiest way to protect your eyes from germs is by avoiding rubbing your eyes. Rubbing your eyes can happen consciously, but most times it happens unconsciously. We might do it when our eyes are tired, itchy, or irritated, but did you know that the more you rub your eyes, the more likely you are to allow germs to enter? Additionally, rubbing your eyes is never encouraged because if any debris is present in your eyes when you rub them, it can increase the chance of damage to your eyes and foreign body sensation. To protect your eyes from developing a serious eye condition, and to protect your eyes from germs, it’s important to never rub your eyes.

2. Keep Your Hands Clean

The main way germs enter your eyes is through your hands. Did you know that your hands carry around 3500 germs? It’s true! If you think about it, it makes sense. You garden with your hands, you cook with your hands, you build appliances with your hands, you even use your hands to clean your nose. If you use your hands often (which you most likely do), it’s also crucial to keep your fingernails trimmed and cleaned. Keeping fingernails cut will give germs a smaller surface area, so they are less likely to collect underneath the nail.

3. Follow Contact Lens Hygiene Guidelines

Do you wear contact lenses? If you do, you know how important it is to be hygienic when wearing them. Before putting contact lenses in, make sure your hands are clean. It’s recommended to clean your contact lens case every day, as well as refilling the case with fresh contact solution every day. If your contact lens case becomes damaged, ensure that you replace it immediately. Last, never wear your contact lenses while swimming. Wearing contact lenses while swimming can cause contact lens irritation, and will also increase the risks of viruses, bacteria, and other germs entering your eyes.
